The right legal team depends on the work that must be done repeatedly and the specialist issues that arise only occasionally. One in-house lawyer may provide valuable continuity without covering every licensing, tax, disputes and tokenisation question. Equally, outside counsel cannot replace a decision maker inside the business.

## When does in-house counsel help?

An in-house lawyer can own the day-to-day contract queue, product-review process, board support and relationship with regulators and outside advisers. The role works best when the firm has enough continuous work and the lawyer has a clear remit, budget and authority to escalate specialist questions.

## When does a fractional GC help?

A fractional GC may be useful when a founder needs recurring legal leadership but not a full-time hire. Define scope, availability, conflicts, information access, who signs off decisions and how specialist work is brought in. A fractional arrangement is not an excuse to avoid building internal compliance ownership.

## Why might a mixed team be necessary?

A business may operate across VARA’s [Dubai virtual-asset rulebooks](https://rulebooks.vara.ae/), the [ADGM FSRA framework](https://www.adgm.com/business-areas/digital-assets) and the [DFSA’s DIFC framework](https://www.dfsa.ae/crypto). These are different regimes. Whether the firm needs separate licensed counsel or technical advisers depends on its actual activities and jurisdictions, not the word “crypto” in its name.

Compare each option using a workstream map: routine contracts, product launches, regulatory applications, corporate governance, disputes, tax and cross-border advice. Ask who does each job, who reviews it and who remains accountable internally. Quote actual fees or salaries only when their source, date and scope are clear; a generic market number is not a reliable purchasing decision.

See our [fractional GC service](https://ape.law/services/fractional-gc-web3-crypto-companies) or [contact Ape Law](https://ape.law/#contact) to discuss the workstreams you need covered.
