Do not verify a crypto exchange from a “best exchanges” list. Verify the legal entity, authority, permission, status and restrictions in the official register. A recognisable brand or app does not prove that the entity serving you holds the permission you expect.

This guide replaces Ape Law's former promotional exchange ranking with a neutral verification workflow. For a source-linked UAE-wide walkthrough of the tracker and browser extension, read [how to check whether a crypto company is licensed](https://ape.law/blog/check-crypto-company-licensed-uae).

## What Are the Five Checks?

### 1. Identify the contracting entity

Read the account terms, footer, onboarding disclosures and payment instructions. Record the exact legal name and registration number. A global brand may use different entities for different countries and services.

### 2. Identify the claimed regulator

Abu Dhabi Global Market's FSRA regulates authorised activity within ADGM. Other UAE services may fall under VARA, the DFSA, the CBUAE or another competent authority. “UAE regulated” is not precise enough.

### 3. Search the official register

Use the relevant regulator's own public register. Search the exact entity, not just the brand. For ADGM, begin with the [ADGM public registers](https://www.adgm.com/public-registers). For Dubai, use [VARA's public register and licensed-activity information](https://www.vara.ae/en/licenses-and-register/).

### 4. Read the permission and restrictions

Confirm that the permission covers the service being offered: venue operation, dealing, arranging, custody, transfer or another activity. Check client, product, territorial and status restrictions. Entity registration alone is not Financial Services Permission.

### 5. Match the result to the customer journey

Check which entity receives money, holds assets, executes trades and handles complaints. A licensed group company does not automatically authorise every affiliate or product.

## What Are Common Warning Signs?

- the website names only a brand, not a legal entity;
- the register entry is for an unrelated group company;
- a commercial registration is presented as regulatory authorisation;
- the permission does not cover custody or exchange activity being offered;
- the firm claims a pending application is a licence;
- payment instructions point to an unexplained third party; or
- terms change the contracting entity without clear notice.

These signs call for further checking; they do not by themselves prove misconduct.

## What Should a Business Counterparty Verify?

In addition to licensing, review ownership and controllers, sanctions, AML/CFT posture, custody and wallet controls, segregation, insurance, complaints, incident history, financial condition, outsourcing and governing-law terms. Define who bears loss in a failed transfer or security incident.

## Can a Register Confirm the Adviser or Safety of the Platform?

No. A register can confirm a permission and status. It normally does not prove which lawyer acted, that every service is compliant or that assets are safe. Treat it as one evidence source.
